Surrounded by mountains, Smith Mountain Lake is Western Virginia’s biggest playground. The fully recreational lake encompasses 32 square miles holds 20,600 acres of water and has over 500 miles of shoreline. It’s one of the youngest lakes in the U.S at 50 years old but the largest man-made lake in Virginia. Dam construction began in 1960. Like its sister to the South, Claytor Lake in Pulaski County, the lake was formed to dam a river and generate electrical power for Appalachian Power Company. It required six years and a crew of 200 to move 300,000 cubic yards of mountain forest and 175,000 cubic feet of concrete to build the Smith Mountain Dam and the lake reached full capacity in 1966. During construction, Smithsonian Institute archaeologists performed an excavation and discovered the Algonquin Indians fished and hunted here many years ago.
Average rainfall is 43” with average temps of 41º F in the winter and 73º F in the summer. The water purity is excellent with temperatures inviting swimming from May through September. Two major motion films, What About Bob? and Lake Effects were filmed at Smith Mountain Lake.
Equidistant (20 miles) from Lynchburg and Roanoke, VA, both small cities provide convenient “big city” amenities to the 22,000 permanent residents of Smith Mountain Lake. Shopping malls and specialty shops, regional airports, full service hospitals, restaurants, golf, professional services, entertainment and historic monuments are just a short drive from the lake. Smith Mountain Lake is a short 45 minute drive southeast of Roanoke, 2 hours north of Raleigh, NC and 3 hours southwest of Richmond.
